Carta de un elefante al Rey de España

Señor Rey de España:
Soy un elefante de Botsuana, el país africano en el que me dicen que su Majestad ha estado recientemente para descansar de sus fatigas, cazándonos en un safari. Los elefantes somos mansos, aunque fieros cuando nos atacan. También nuestros dioses, los de la sabana, son dioses buenos, no vengativos, aunque sí celosos de sus habitantes.
Quizás por ello, han querido reservar su vida, importante para su país, aunque han querido advertirle con su caída y sus fracturas en el campamento desde donde salía para cazarnos, que sería mejor ya para su Majestad que ha vivido ya más de lo que vivimos uno de nosotros, dedicase su tiempo a otras cosas, en vez de venir a matarnos.
Por ejemplo a seguir a esa España que se está desmoronando económicamente, a ese 52% de jóvenes que sufren el aguijón del paro después de tantos años de estudios, o simplemente a disfrutar de ver a los animales correr y divertirse en su habitad natural, pero sin escopetas, con las manos vacías o llenas de flores.
Nosotros sabemos que no ha hecho nada ilegal viniendo y pagando muchos miles de euros para matar a uno de los nuestros. Se lo permiten las leyes de mi país. Para muchos, matar gratuitamente animales es como lo era antiguamente cazar a lazo a los negros o indios para esclavizarlos.
¿Pero basta que algo sea legal para realizarlo? Existen también las leyes del corazón, no escritas, las de los sentimientos humanos, que dicen por cierto que son superiores a los nuestros y existen ciertos ejemplos que un Rey debe ofrecer de su vida incluso privada.
Su Majestad, desde su primer discurso como Rey, afirmó que quería serlo de todos los españoles. Yo sé que en España hay aún mucha gente que no se importa de ver sufrir o morir a los animales y que hasta se divierte observándolo. Pero existen también millones, sobretodo de jóvenes, que aman a los animales, que quieren protegerles y conviven con ellos. A esos millones de españoles, no creo que les guste especialmente la imagen de su Rey llegando a esta África, que es nuestro territorio, escopeta al ombro, para distraerse disparándonos sin que podamos defendernos.
Nos han dicho, Majestad, que posee una de las mejores colecciones de escopetas de caza que existen. ¿Podemos hacerle una sugerencia? Haga de ellas un museo y anuncie a los españoles, que su Rey ya no va a matar a ningún animal y que los años que aún le queden de existencia- que le deseamos sean aún muchos más de los que nosotros vivimos, los va a dedicar a distraerse a favor de la vida y no de la muerte.
Sabemos que nosotros, los elefantes, como el resto de los animales, no tenemos derechos. Nacemos para ser cazados y muertos. Pero queremos recordarle que nosotros no hacemos mal a nadie. Somos sensibles y humildes y hasta nos parecemos a ustedes los Homo Sapiens. Dicen los zoólogos que somos de los pocos animales que respetamos a nuestros difuntos y de los pocos que saben reconocerse, como los humanos, en un espejo.
Es verdad que quizás para ustedes los humanos los elefantes seamos inútiles, no somos indispensables para nada, pero, no por ello deben tener el derecho de matarnos. También las monarquías hoy- y lo digo con todo el respeto- aparecen inútiles para muchos y no por eso se hace la caza a los reyes y reinas.
Y hablando de reinas, nos gustaría saber qué piensa su discreta y querida reina Sofía de su amor por la caza de elefantes. Ella como mujer y como madre, debe saber que en nuestra organización en la sabana, vivimos un reino matriarcal. Ellas, las elefantas, organizan y dirigen nuestra comunidad. Son madres amorosas, dan de mamar a sus hijos durante tres y hasta cinco años y sufren como ustedes los humanos cuando se los matan por capricho.
Por último nos gustaría que sus nietos y biznietos, Majestades, un día consiguieran divertirse sin necesidad de venir a África a cazarnos y arrancar nuestros colmillos de marfil para adornar los palacios reales con sus trofeos de muerte.
Quizás, ni queriendo podrán ya hacerlo porque quedamos sólo 30.000 elefantes en todo el mundo y al ritmo con el que nos matan, sus nietos ya no tendrán como hacerlo, porque habremos sido extintos. Tendrán que conformarse con cazar cucarachas que al parecer tienen un millón de años y resisten hasta a las radiaciones atómicas. Nosotros, no. Somos más grandes, pero más frágiles. Quizás por ello nos amen tanto los niños a los que les gusta divertirse con nosotros. Vivos, no muertos.
Sólo desearle, Majestad, en nombre de nuestros dioses, que se recupere pronto del susto que le hemos dado, que no era para matarle, sino para hacerle pensar que sería mejor para su Majestad, que a la hora de dejar este Planeta, los elefantes que aún estemos vivos, podamos llorar por usted en vez de alegrarnos por haber perdido a un verdugo.
Los vientos de la selva son misteriosos, Majestad. ¿ Por qué no nos regala sus escopetas en vida?

Internet yet again in peril, in the form of CISPA

Right now, the US Congress is sneaking in a new law that gives them big brother spy powers over the entire web -- and they're hoping the world won't notice. We helped stop their Net attack last time, let's do it again.
Over 100 Members of Congress are backing a bill (CISPA) that would give private companies and the US government the right to spy on any of us at any time for as long as they want without a warrant. This is the third time the US Congress has tried to attack our Internet freedom. But we helped beat SOPA, and PIPA -- and now we can beat this new Big Brother law.
Our global outcry has played a leading role in protecting the Internet from governments eager to monitor and control what we do online. Let's stand together once again -- and beat this law for good. Sign the petition then forward to everyone who uses the Internet:

Under the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA), if a cyber threat is even suspected, companies we use to access the Internet will have the right to collect information on our activities, share that with the government, refuse to notify us that we are being watched and then use a blanket immunity clause to protect themselves from being sued for violation of privacy or any other illegal action. It's a crazy destruction of the privacy we all rely on in our everyday emails, Skype chats, web searches and more.
But we know that the US Congress is afraid of the world's response. This is the third time they have tried to rebrand their attempt to attack our Internet freedom and push it through under the radar, each time changing the law's name and hoping citizens would be asleep at the wheel. Already, Internet rights groups like the Electronic Frontier Foundation have condemned the bill for its interference with basic privacy rights -- now it's time for us to speak out.

Obama administration is still voicing support for SOPA
Can you believe this? After the largest online protest in history, the Obama administration is still voicing support for SOPA.
We promised to ask for your help if SOPA returned. We're asking now. This kind of backtracking demands a strong, fast response. We're running a petition to demand that Obama drop all support for internet censorship.
Our goal? Get more signatures than the top petition on whitehouse.gov -- 151,000 signatures. Tell Obama to promise: "I will never advance legislation that blocks websites or disconnects Americans’ internet access.”
What is the White House working on exactly? Just the other day, the administration sent a letter to Congress to demonstrate their support for new internet censorship legislation. A few weeks ago, the White House struck a deal to give corporations private powers to shut down your internet connection (after "six strikes" without due process or judicial review), completely in secret.
Obama's internet would let private companies block sites and turn off our web connections. Blocking websites censors free speech, hurts jobs, and breaks the internet. These are tactics used by totalitarian governments and we believe they’re never ok.Let's get more signatures than any petition on whitehouse.gov.
As Wired noted*, "The White House did say that it wouldn't endorse a bill that endangers freedom of expression, increases cybersecurity risks, or negatively affects the DNS system. On the other hand, it says elsewhere that "combating online infringement" -- not protecting free speech -- is a governmental priority "of the highest order." What about free speech, Obama?
Sign the petition now, then share it to keep the internet strong. Our friends need to know where the President is currently standing on SOPA.
